Plant of the Week-Deciduous Azaleas

This is the time of the year when evergreen azaleas are the queens of the garden and edges of the woods. Their lessor known cousins, deciduous azaleas, are also deserving of that title. Mostly hybrids of several native genera, (Rhododendron calendulaceum, R. arborescens, and R. occidentale -Pacific Northwest) their unusual flower color, sweet fragrance and lovely fall color as well as tolerance to sun make them a nice choice for specimens or the shrub border. Usually growing from 4-6 feet, they can be pruned after bloom to control shape.
