Used by colonists as a tea and culinary herb for roasted meats. Very showy herb with running rootstocks, erect, square stems, toothed aromatic leaves, and bright spidery flowers. Plant in moisture-retentive soil in full sun to part shade. Divide every three years. In wild garden plant with Joe-pye-weed, hibiscus, queen-of-the-prairie, cranesbill geranium, thermopsis, meadow rue, and snakeroot. Plant in shady border with astilbe, begonis, turtlehead, foxglove, hardy geraniums, hesperis, and toadlilies.
