Fans of broad, flat, pointed leaves grow from thick rhizomes that creep along the soil surface. Flower stalks emerge bearing large buds that open to big papery irises with bearded falls. Intense, nearly black, violet colored flowers are contrasted nicely by the bright orange beard. Flowers are also fragrant. Full sun in average to dry, well drained soil that does not remain too wet in winter. Zone 3-8. Deer resistant.
