A compact mid-summer bloomer. Clumps of thick, leathery, glossy, deep green, deeply cut foliage bear many flowering spikes that rise a short distance above the foliage. Poisonous.

Thrives in moist, humus-rich soil in sun to part shade.

Does not like to be disturbed once established. Zone 4-8.

Plant in back of shady borders or woods edge with anemone, campanula, lobelia, trollius, osmunda, ligularia, and rheum.  Looks great with amsonia for fall color.

Deer Resistant.  Rabbit Resistant.

CAUTION:  toxic if eaten/harmful via skin.  All parts are poisonous especially the roots.
