Tall stems with opposite lance shaped leaves arise in loose clumps from rhizomes. Long lasting, vanilla scented, terminal clusters of flowers attract butterflies. Deer resistant. Average to moist soil in full sun. Native to most of US. Zone 3-9. Great plant for late summer bloom in sunny borders, wildflower or butterfly gardens. Tolerant of a wet site for bog and meadow plantings. Plant in back of borders with ornamental grasses, asters, joe-pye-weed, monarda, and veronicastrum.
