An attractive wildflower with spirals of lance-shaped leaves on stiff stems that bear clusters of flowers and long pointed seed pods. Attracts butterflies and is drought resistant. Full sun in ordinary soil. Plant is slow to emerge in spring but are very cold hardy and heat tolerant. Plant has brittle tap root and should not be disturbed once planted. Native over most of US. Plant in wild gardens or meadows with grasses, joe-pye weed, solidago, asters, coneflowers, and black-eyed Susan's. Plant in formal borders with gaillardia, salvia, monarda, Russian sage, and daylilies. Zone 4-8.
