This South African thistle produces a spiny rosete of dark green leaves followed by a flower stalk up to 3 feet tall in mid summer. Unusual plant, but very striking in summer. Drought tolerant. This plant does well in sun to part shade on slopes or in well drained areas. Plant with yellows and other purples, Liatris, Helianthus, Veronicas, etc. Don’t plant near a walkway, because it bites! Zone 6-10.
