Easy, long-lived, exceptionally hardy. Foliage is maroon tinted as shoots first appear in spring then unfold into bushy rounded mounds of green foliage with large showy very fragrant flowers. Plant in moist, loamy, humus rich soil in full sun or light shade. Mulch and feed with well-rotted manure when leaf growth starts. Avoid disturbing roots. For early-spring color combine their maroon shoots with minor bulbs. The expanding peony foliage will shroud the declining bulb forliage. Plant in sunny border with daisys, foxglove, delphinium, coreopsis, sundrops, and veronica.
