Small, short-trunked tree or large multi-stemmed tree, the Common Paw Paw tree produces deep burgundy flowers from April to May and fruits in late August/early September. however, if your planting this tree for its fruit, your in it for the long haul, as Paw Paws only begin to fruit after the first 7 years of growing. leaves turn a bright yellow in fall.. 

Full sun-part shade, in full shade it becomes leggy. Prefers moist acidic, fertile soils. It's native habitat includes ditches, ravines, depressions, flood plains, bottom lands and makes for a great zone 2 rain garden option. 

Zone 5-9. Understory tree, Aromatic, Fall conspicuous. Attracts birds and butterflies.
