Recent introduction. H. serrata are more stem and bud hardy than the H. macrophyllas. This one also blooms on both old and new wood, giving a long bloom period of red lace cap flowers. Likes abundant moisture but not wet feet. Deep humus soil preferred. Protect from winter winds. Literature suggests sun or light shade. I fear the hot afternoon sun on our 90 degree days. Sulphur is a good inexpensive naturally occurring additive to quickly lower pH. Best in the understory of the shade garden. Mass hydrangeas but mix the colors and flower types. Prune after bloom and protect from winter winds since blooms form on last yearโs growth. Zone 5-9.
