Tough and adaptable iris. Clumps of erect, strap like leaves, 1 inch wide, dark purple at the base, shoots stiff, near black stems bearing multiple buds that open to 3 inch wide irises. Although this iris is tolerant of dry soils, it grows best in a wet site in full sun. Zone 4-9. Great plant to naturalize a wet area around ponds or streams, but will grow in sunny borders for an early blooming iris with poppies, aquilegia, peony, doronicum, and geraniums.
