A tall, late-summer bloomer. Clumps of thick, leathery, glossy, deep green, deeply cut foliage bear many flowering spikes that rise a short distance above the foliage. Poisonous. Thrives in moist, humus-rich soil in semi shade.  Deer and rabbit resistant.  Does not like to be disturbed once established.  Native to China.  Zones 3-7. Plant in back of shady borders or woods edge with anemone, campanula, lobelia, trollius, osmunda, ligularia, and rheum. CAUTION:  toxic if eaten/harmful via skin.  All parts are poisonous especially the roots.
