A leggy, suckering, deciduous shrub, somewhat irregular in shape. Tall- best suited for back of border or hedge. Exceptional fragrance on red buds open to dark purple flowers. Very fragrant. Flowers are deep violet red. Tolerates most soils although prefers well drained soils with neutral ph. Full sun. Avoid shade and damp conditions to control mildew. Zone 3-8. Attracts butterflies, Deer Resistant
