Highly distinctive fern. The fertile fronds give it a very vertical stately appearance. Fronds stand stiffly erect in the center of each crown, surrounded by soft green sterile fronds (leaves) narrow at both ends. Full sun or light shade in moist, acid soil. Likes to be mulched. Lush plant for damp woodlands and streamside. Interplant with spring bulbs, hostas, hardy geraniums, lamium, primroses, ligularia, and rodgersia.
