Forms an erect, rather stiff clump of wide, olive green blades that will tolerate a windy site and some snow load before breaking down. Foliage turns a golden yellow in fall. Divide in spring or early summer. 2014 Perennial Plant of the Year. Prefers full sun and moist soil but will tolerate sand, heavy clay, and boggy areas. Thrives along the coast by the ocean, tolerating salt spray and high wind. Switch grass can be used as a groundcover to control erosion along ditches and for transition areas between woods and garden. Tolerant of salt runoff from roads. Naturalize with rudbeckia, asters, coneflowers, and boltonia. Zone 5-9.
