Bushy clumps of thick, leathery evergreen leaves. Site these where they will stay for many years, since the plants resent being disturbed. Trim the old leaves to the ground in late winter to give the flowers maximum impact. Flower stalks bear showy cup-shaped blooms with a single flower in shades of deep, grey-purple, black to purple-black. Evenly moist, humus rich soil in light to full shade. Hardy to Zone 5 or colder. Plant with ferns, hosta, lungwort, tiarella, crested iris, cyclamen, and sweet woodruff. Deer and Rabbit Resistant. CAUTION: Harmful if eaten/Skin irritant.
