Very interesting native plant that thrives in moist shady locations. Has green oval leaves with striking red flowers with a yellow star at the tip in June-July. Little Redhead' is a superior selection of the species. Does well in a moist woodland garden. Grow in part to full shade in humus-rich soil. Spigelia come up quite late in the spring, so mark the planting spot to avoid accidentally planting something over it.
Zone 5-9.
Note: Used by the Cherokee and other Native American tribes as a ritual and ceremonial herb to induce visions and foretell the future.
