An excellent tree for small properties, this acer is smaller and has a deeper red color compared to the traditional ‘Bloodgood.’ With a slow growing, upright habit, this Acer reaches a height and spread between 6-10ft in the first 10 years, later reaching heights of 20ft with a spread of 15ft. Blooms small, almost inconspicuous purple umbels of flowers in mid-spring. Deserves a location where its ornamental features can be appreciated (near a deck or patio).
Black Walnut Resistant, and rabbit tolerant
Part shade. Average, moist, well-draining soil. Zone 5-8.
Mulch to help retain soil moisture and keep roots cool.
Fertilize in spring before new leaves.
Rarely requires pruning, and does not tolerate heavy pruning well. If necessary, prune in late fall - mid winter.
