A deciduous and somewhat sprawling native shrub, Common Elderberry produces large clusters of white flowers that give way to dark purple/black, tasty, edible and medicinal fruits in summer. Great when planted in mass, as a specimen, in shrub boarders, as a screen and along bodies of water. With good erosion control and tolerance of wet soils, consider this shrub form zone 1 of rain gardens where water stands for a few hours post rain events.

Full sun - part shade. Keep soil consistently moist in full sun. Humusy,  moist-wet and well-draining soil.

Attracts pollinators, deer resistant, clay and wet soil tolerant.

Prune in late winter with 1 of 3 techniques:

1. Remove death and weakened stems,

2. Shorten of one-year stems,

3. Cut back to ground to rejuvenate shrub.
