Striking iridescent violet-blue flowers bloom in late spring on this upright Rhododendron. Glossy green foliage gains bronzy hues in winter. 'Blue Baron' looks great as specimen or when planted in groups, and makes a nice addition to boarders or beds.
Full sun - part shade. Acidic, rich, humusy, consistently moist, well-draining soil. Protect from strong winds. Zone 5-8.
Attracts pollinators including butterflies and hummingbirds. Rabbit resistant.
Consider planting in raised bed if planting in heavy clay soil.
Apply mulch to protect shallow root system as well as maintain soil moisture and stabilize soil temperatures.
To lower pH add an acidifier such as sulfur of iron sulfate, to increase pH add limestone or lime to soil.
Remove spent blooms immediately after flowering.
