Spring leaves emerge rich purple but as summer moves in, they turn a deep near-black, retiring to red orange in fall. Blooms are soft panicles of red-pink that appear like smoke, hence the name Smokebush. Can be trained as a large shrub or small tree. Winecraft Black also makes a great specimen plant, or can be used as a low hedge or mass planting.
Full sun. Average, moist, well-draining soil. Zone 4-8.
Blooms on old wood - pruning is rarely needed but can be done in spring.
