Rough perennial that commonly occurs in fields & open woods, roadsides, etc.  Stems and leaves exude a milky sap when cut or bruised.  Flowers give way to seed pods. Average to moist soil in full sun. Native to most of US.  Zone 4-9. Great plant for late summer bloom in sunny borders, wildflower or butterfly gardens. Tolerant of a wet site for bog and meadow plantings. Plant in back of borders with ornamental grasses, asters, joe-pye-weed, monarda, and veronicastrum
