An important native deciduous shrub with a broad, rounded habit. Yellow-green mid-spring flowers give way to bright red berry droops in fall, and are attractive to birds. A host plant for the Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly! Great in shade boarder or woodland gardens, and because it naturally occurs in wet soils, Spice Bush is a good zone 1 rain garden options where standing water occurs for a period of time.

Attract pollinators including birds and butterflies, deer resistant, drought, clay, wet soil and black walnut tolerant.

Full sun- part shade. Average, moist-wet, well-draining soil.  Zone 4-9. Best fall foliage color in higher sun, but will require mulch to maintain soil moisture.
